Level 1 – Essential Skills & RPL

Essential Skills are:

  • The foundation skills that everyone uses to carry out the tasks of a job
  • The skills we use to learn all other skills
  • Nine in total

Recognizing Prior Learning (RPL) is:

  • A process for identifying and documenting a person’s skills, knowledge and gifts gained through formal and informal learning
  • It includes life experiences, employment, hobbies, volunteer work and studying on your own
  • A way to gain credit toward education programs and open doors to employment. (More)

In this workshop you’ll learn:

  • The nine Essential Skills – what they are, why they are needed, and how they affect adults’ lives
  • Who the provincial Essential Skills coordinators are and how to contact them
  • How to use the HRSDC website as a resource tool
  • Recognizing Prior Learning (RPL) – what it is, how it works, and how it can help communities and individuals

“Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.”
